Hanukkah

Yeshua (Jesus) said what during Hanukkah?

שמח חג (Happy Holiday)! Did you know that Hanukkah (the festival of dedication) appears in the new testament of the Bible? And that Yeshua (Jesus) was in Jerusalem during Hanukkah? Yes, it’s true. The year 1611 version of the King James Bible recorded this event in Chapter John 10 (with reference to Verses 22 and 23) as follows:

22¶ And it was at Hierusalem the feast of the dedication, & it was winter.

23And Iesus walked in the temple in Solomons porch.

The Complete Jewish Version, gives the following translation:

22 Then came Hanukkah in Yerushalayim. It was winter,

23 and Yeshua was walking around inside the Temple area, in Shlomo’s Colonnade.

During the discussion between the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua and the Judeans, Yeshua said the following in Verses 27 to 30:

27 My sheep listen to my voice, I recognize them, they follow me, 28 and I give them eternal life. They will absolutely never be destroyed, and no one will snatch them from my hands. 29 My Father, who gave them to me, is greater than all; and no one can snatch them from the Father’s hands. 30 I and the Father are one.”

Yes, Yeshua and the Almighty Living God of Israel are one. This reconfirms the Shema Yisrael ( שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל) written in Deuteronomy 6 Verses 4 to 9:

(A:vi, S: v) Sh’ma, Yisra’elAdonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad [Hear, Isra’el! Adonai our God, Adonai is one]; and you are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources. These words, which I am ordering you today, are to be on your heart; and you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them on your hand as a sign, put them at the front of a headband around your forehead, and write them on the door-frames of your house and on your gates.

Hanukkah · This Shabbat

Hanukkah

Shabbat Shalom, Friends

Next week is Hanukkah (the Festival of Dedication or Lights). This is my second Hanukkah since I started blogging. If I think back to my first blog posts in mid August 2016, these were simply 3 youtube videos about Jewish believers in Yeshua. Now, it’s 80+ posts later. Thank you for reading my blogposts and visiting my blog. It’s much appreciated.

There is a reference to Hanukkah found in the New Testament. In Yochanan / John 10:22 to 42, we read about Yeshua’s discussion with unbelievers who wanted to stone him. This occurred during Hanukkah. What stands out for me are the 2 verses found in John 10: 37 and 38:

22 Then came Hanukkah in Yerushalayim. It was winter,

23 and Yeshua was walking around inside the Temple area, in Shlomo’s Colonnade.

24 So the Judeans surrounded him and said to him, “How much longer are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us publicly!”

25 Yeshua answered them, “I have already told you, and you don’t trust me. The works I do in my Father’s name testify on my behalf,

26 but the reason you don’t trust is that you are not included among my sheep.

27 My sheep listen to my voice, I recognize them, they follow me,

28 and I give them eternal life. They will absolutely never be destroyed, and no one will snatch them from my hands.

29 My Father, who gave them to me, is greater than all; and no one can snatch them from the Father’s hands.

30 I and the Father are one.”

31 Once again the Judeans picked up rocks in order to stone him.

32 Yeshua answered them, “You have seen me do many good deeds that reflect the Father’s power; for which one of these deeds are you stoning me?”

33 The Judeans replied, “We are not stoning you for any good deed, but for blasphemy — because you, who are only a man, are making yourself out to be God [Hebrew: Elohim].”

34 Yeshua answered them, “Isn’t it written in your Torah, `I have said, “You people are Elohim’ “?h

35 If he called `elohim’ the people to whom the word of Elohim was addressed (and the Tanakh cannot be broken),

36then are you telling the one whom the Father set apart as holy and sent into the world, `You are committing blasphemy,’ just because I said, `I am a son of Elohim’?

37 “If I am not doing deeds that reflect my Father’s power, don’t trust me.

38 But if I am, then, even if you don’t trust me, trust the deeds; so that you may understand once and for all that the Father is united with me, and I am united with the Father.”

39One more time they tried to arrest him, but he slipped out of their hands.

40 He went off again beyond the Yarden, where Yochanan had been immersing at first, and stayed there.

41 Many people came to him and said, “Yochanan performed no miracles, but everything Yochanan said about this man was true.”

42 And many people there put their trust in him.

The Father and Yeshua are one. Yeshua has been given all authority from the Father. This resembles the Sh’ma [Hear] (D’varim / Deutoromony 6: 4 )

4 “Sh’ma, Yisra’el! ADONAI Eloheinu, ADONAI echad [Hear, Isra’el! ADONAI our God, ADONAI is one];

Furthermore, Hanukkah also makes me think of Mattityahu / Matthew 5:14 to 16:

14 “You are light for the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.

15 Likewise, when people light a lamp, they don’t cover it with a bowl but put it on a lampstand, so that it shines for everyone in the house.

16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they may see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.

May the Light of our Salvation shine through out his dark world.

Have a blessed and peaceful Shabbat!
